Mark Fletcher

Landscape Photographer

Hi my name is Mark Fletcher and I’m an alcoholic, sorry wrong group 😂. I’m from Tipperary. I’m a quiet person not a man of many words, and I’m a landscape photographer.

What was your path to becoming a Landscape Photographer & What was your first camera?

I have always enjoyed the outdoors and walks in the Sleeve Bloom Mountains, but never thought that would lead to me being a photographer. When I would be out walking, if I seen a scene id say that would make a lovely photo. So I bought a camera back in 2017 it was a canon 1300D. And that’s where it all started for me.

What was your favourite Landscape Adventure Story since becoming a Photographer?

My favourite landscape adventure story, God there is so many, any day I am out is an adventure. One that sticks out is a trip to Valentia lighthouse with Mark O Brien and Bernard Geraghty.

During storm Denis watching and photographing the waves hitting the lighthouse and sitting on the ground so we wouldn’t get blown over by the wind and getting hammered by the rain and hailstones, that was a fun day.

What was your worst in-the-field experience as a landscape Photographer?

My worst in the field experience was last year in Donegal with Bernard and Milo Vambeck, we decided to go to Donegal and last minute thing, were were going to hike mount Errigal when we got there that night because it was given a cloud inversion the next morning, when we arrived it was clear skies, so we decided we would drive on to Fanad Lighthouse to shoot sunrise there, got there set up camp for the night woke up that morning for sunrise I couldn’t see the lighthouse with the fog. So we went on to Sturrall Ridge that evening for sunset, and we said we would camp there for the night and just enjoy the night there. We hiked out there set up the tents within minutes we were covered in midges and flying ants, I never experienced anything like it, we ended up taking the tents back down and going home. Full weekend in donegal and not one photo between the 3 of us.

Sunrise or Sunset & Why?

Sunrise for me its just great being up at silly o clock doing something you love and knowing the rest of the country is still asleep. I have always been an early bird anyway. It’s just magical watching the sun come up.

Where is your favourite Location in Ireland to Photograph & Why?

Favourite location is anywhere in Ireland, it just has everything mountains rivers lakes and amazing coastline. If I was to pick one place it would have to be Kerry, it has it all. And my good pal Mark O’Brien has been great a few time to show me around.

What is your favourite photograph, that you’ve taken to date, & Why?

My favourite photo to date is a recent one I took of an old man and his dog in my local woods. I know him for years and he has beaten cancer, everyday without fail you will find him there with his dog, always ready for a chat.

What equipment / Setup are you currently using?

I am currently using a Canon EOS R, Format Hi-Tech filter system and Benro tripod.

Top Tip for anyone starting out?

Top tip for anyone starting out is enjoy the journey do some workshops too, and do be afraid to ask for advice from people. One thing I have learned is the photography community is amazing always there to help out. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Best Advise you’ve personally been given?

Best advice I’ve been given was from Bernard slow down walk before you can run, don’t try to do everything at once, learn your exposure triangle, move on learn your composition learn how to edit, but most of all just enjoy being out.

Who is your biggest inspiration as a Landscape Photographer

Biggest inspiration as a landscape photographer, god there is so many but I will narrow it down to 3 Bernard Geraghty, Sean O’Riordan and Mark O’Brien, that’s the level I am trying to get to. And they are always there to help out with advice on gear settings places to go, and give great advice on editing.

Who is your favourite Irish photographer at the moment ?

My favourite landscape photographer is probably Reuben Fields, god the images that man puts up is just amazing, very nice guy. Again, there is so many talented photographers here in Ireland but for me Reuben stands out. I hope I don’t offend anyone with that answer.
