Where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea
by Steven Hanna
The Mountains of Mourne, or as they are often referred to locally, The Mournes, are a huge attraction in Northern Ireland to both tourists and locals alike. An area of outstanding natural beauty and a place of inspiration for many artists, writers and songwriters – one of the best known being Irish musician, Percy French, who wrote ‘Where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea’.
Of course with the incredible scenery and ever-changing light in The Mournes, it’s an area I visit often with my camera gear – capturing those moments in time – from Tollymore Forest to the 850m peak of Slieve Donard or back down to the seaside and the coastal town of Newcastle.
If you have planned to visit Northern Ireland, a trip to The Mournes really should be on your itinerary! As well as the granite mountain range you can also visit the tranquil and aptly named Silent Valley Reservoir. Take a walk around the lake in the nearby Castlewellan Forest Park. If you’re feeling up to it, climb the peaks of Slieve Binnian or Slieve Donard and there’s so much more to see and do!
Why not have a constant reminder of this beautiful scenery on your walls? You can browse and buy any of my range of landscapes from The Mournes and many other Northern Ireland tourist destinations and places of interest on my Nebo Luxury Fine Art online shop here.
